My favorite of this trio is the 2002 Fort Ross Vineyard Pinot Noir which displays the best balance between fruit and wood. Attractive plum, currant, and forest floor aromas are followed by elegant, medium-bodied flavors, sweet tannin, decent acidity, and abundant earthy underbrush notes mixed with the sweet, voluptuous fruit. 88 Points RMP
Bountiful red fruit dominates – raspberry, black cherry, sweet strawberry – accented invitingly with hints of exotic spice, gingerbread and a warm earthiness. There is a long lingering, chewy finish with the fruit supported by cola and cigar box. This sumptuous extract is balanced with bright acidity and softly framed by fine tannins.
This wine initially exhibits cranberry and cherry on the nose with subtle notes of tea leaves and bacon. On the palate, one is struck by the racy red fruit flavors and earth. Chalk, tar and some forest floor help fill out the bottom. There is a bright natural acidity, firm tannins and a nervosity in this wine which helps to frame and focus the wine. Drinking well now, but cellaring for 2 to 3 years is recommended.
The color of the wine is impressively dark for Pinot Noir. The aroma is a beautiful and exotic array of ripe red berries, spices and dried flowers. On the palate the wine is rich, and smooth with flavors of dried strawberries and cranberries. It ends with an intriguing finish of black tea.
The aromas are a decadent mixture of ripe cherries, Asian spices, sweet tobacco and vanillin. On the palate the wine is rich and mouth filling, with flavors of sweet tobacco, candied cherries and orange rinds. The wine has mild tannins. This wine is highly enjoyable now but will benefit from two to four more years of bottling aging to reach a peak of development.
